Installing boards

Length

Installing boards lengthwise in a room will give an appearance of a longer room, adding a sense of depth. Board positioning will be dependent on the house joist system, so be sure to discuss your options with your contractor.

You should always consider installing hardwood flooring perpendicular to your floor joist.

Short

Installing boards across the shorter side of the room will tend to make the room feel smaller. Board positioning will be dependent on the house joist system, so be sure to discuss your options with your contractor.

Diagonal

Installing the flooring at a diagonal will give the room a little more character. Board positioning will be dependent on the house joist system, so be sure to discuss your options with your contractor.

Random Width Plank

Random width plank floors can be installed using 2-3 different sized plank strips giving a little more variance to the floor. This is typically done using 3”, 5” and 7” boards. Board positioning will be dependent on the house joist system, so be sure to discuss your options with your contractor.

Parquet

Parquet flooring is a non-linear style in which the boards are installed in various directions creating a geometric design. There are a variety of patterns to choose from when installing parquet floors, most commonly “finger block” or “herring bone.” Board positioning will be dependent on the house joist system, so be sure to discuss your options with your contractor.
